Struggle to find balance on vacation? Listen up...
Based on how many questions I received on this very topic in my most recent Instagram Q&A, it's apparent that sooo many of us struggle with balance, especially while traveling.
And I get it - I've been there, and it took me years of working on my relationship with food and exercise to finally understand what was needed to achieve a true sense of balance.
It begins with how we live our everyday life and the mindset we have towards "wellness" in the first place.
When our normal, day-to-day diet is overly restrictive, we set ourselves up for an inevitable swing the opposite direction. This is exactly why you might feel "out of control" on vacation, knowing it's temporary OR find vacation extremely stressful due to the lack of "allowed" or "safe" foods available.
In order to break this cycle, we have to release this control and allow ALL foods to fit into our normal diet. Over time this gives "forbidden" or "bad" foods less power and control over us.
Life is to be LIVED, and food is meant to be enjoyed. Some foods fuel the body and others nourish the soul through experiences.
Especially while traveling, it's important to remind yourself that the stress created by food choices is far worse for your health than the food itself.
Commit to Your Non-Negotiables
That all being said, it's still important to take care of yourself with daily habits for the mind, body, and spirit. Instead of stressing over trying to do all of the things you might in your normal routine, I instead encourage you to choose just 2-3 daily, non-negotiable habits you're willing and able to commit to while traveling.
This could look like some morning movement or simply taking 5 minutes to meditate in bed before starting the day.
When you commit to what makes you feel grounded and connected to yourself, you end up being more present and mindful which is the goal of any trip in my opinion.
Remedies for travel puffiness
If you're like me and tend to swell easily, boy do I have some recs for you. Regardless, being sedentary on long flights, walking a lot, eating new foods and drinking more than usual can cause swelling.
Some of this is just the price you pay for travel, but I've found some helpful products and practices to help me get back to feeling my best. These include:
- Legs up the wall - lay on your back with your butt pressed up against the base board and extend your legs up the wall for at least 10 minutes. This helps blood and lymph flow and is great post-flight or after a long day on your feet.
- Lymphatic drainage massage - this is a practice intended to help your lymph system move toxins out of the body and is a wonderful way to reset. I recommend booking one ahead of time for when you return from your trip!
- Face & eye mask combo - below are the products I've found really help face, neck and eye puffiness! You might feel silly wearing them all at the same time, but I promise it's worth it.
Supplements to keep your body & mind happy
While I by NO means expect perfection, especially while traveling, keeping my supplement routine relatively consistent always makes me feel better when my diet and habits are out of whack.
A few supplements I take with me while traveling and encourage you to consider include:
- Probiotic to support your gut - my three favorite brands are linked here
- Magnesium to help with sleep and relaxation
- Zinc to keep your immune system in fighting shape
- Liver Protect to support detoxification
Carve out time daily for YOU
I know this might be easier said than done when you're traveling with friends or loved ones and have a packed itinerary. Yet I can't stress enough how important it is to ensure you take time daily for yourself.
This could look like some morning movement in the gym or simply taking 5 minutes to meditate in bed before starting the day.
When you commit to even just a few moments to reground and reconnect with yourself, you end up being more present and mindful which is the goal of any trip in my opinion.
