If there’s one thing that really just brings me back to my childhood, it’s a good ol’ apple crisp. This was my mom’s go-to dessert that made a regular appearance at family dinners alongside some BlueBell ice cream. Not only was it a favorite of everyone in the family (and still is), but it was crazy simple to throw together on the fly.
While I still adore and dream about my mom’s classic version made with flour, brown sugar and butter, it’s fun for me to try to recreate these nostalgic favorites with a few nutritious swaps. Therefore, I hope that this Healthy Apple Crisp will likewise be a crowd favorite in your family this fall with ingredients that everyone can get excited about.
Plus, this version just happens to be gluten-free, vegan and refined sugar-free, which is always a bonus in my book!
Personally, my go-to apples to enjoy on their own as well in recipes are Honey Crisp. But considering all apples are in season this time of year, whatever you prefer or can get your hands on is fantastic!
Yet when it comes to apples in general, I highly suggest you stick to organic when possible, as this fruit typically tops the Dirty Dozen list of produce with the most pesticide residue. While, yes, organic is indeed pricier, it’s a worthwhile investment in your and your family’s health.
Apples, though, are perhaps my most frequently enjoyed fruit because they just always seem to hit the spot and they boast some impressive health benefits as well. Apples are packed with fiber and are high in polyphenols, which are plant compounds with antioxidant properties. Consuming apples might boost heart health, reduce the risk of diabetes, benefit the microbiome by feeding healthy gut bacteria, prevent cancer and more.
Plus, they’re incredibly versatile to cook with and make the perfect addition to any fall-inspired meal or dessert. For more ways to whip up this seasonal staple, be sure to check out my Recipe Round Up: Cozy Fall Eats & Drinks blog post.
But let’s get real, the best part of any crisp is the crumble topping, am I right? If this recipe isn’t enough to convince you, go ahead and also whip up my 6-Ingredient Healthy Peach Crisp which is just as delicious!
Gluten-free rolled oats add amazing texture and chew while the walnuts are my personal favorite addition for a bit of crunch. You can absolutely substitute these for pecans or almonds as well if you prefer! Though walnuts are one of my go-tos for a variety of reasons beyond their delicious taste.
Walnuts are high in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants which promote hair and skin health as well as brain function. Plus these nuts are notable for their ability to promote arterial strength, help strengthen bones, prevent cancer and more.
For more info on these and more of my favorites, my Why I’m Nuts About Nuts (& You Should be Too) post is a great resource!
These ingredients make the perfect base for a crumble topping that you’ll have to hold yourself back from devouring all on its own (or is that only me…?). Sprinkle this on top of the simple apple filling and let the oven make your house or apartment smell like actual heaven.
I highly recommend serving this Healthy Apple Crisp with your favorite ice cream or whipped cream, and I can tell you from personal experience that it tastes just as delicious enjoyed as leftovers the next day as well .
