Golden Milk Oatmeal

breakfast recipes May 09, 2019

A bowl of warm, cozy oats is truly one of life’s simple pleasures. Since I was little, oatmeal has been my all-time favorite breakfast. Whether it was a packet of instant Quaker or a serving of my mom’s hearty Irish steel cut, I’ve always been on board. And perhaps the only way to take this comforting bowl to the next level is to add the goodness of Golden Milk.

If you’re not familiar with Golden Milk, it’s typically a mixture of turmeric and other spices added to milk and served hot or iced. Lately, I’ve been obsessed with Luna Fixa’s Curcuma Golden Paste, which makes a DIY Golden Milk incredibly easy to whip up.

This paste is a mixture of coconut oil, turmeric, cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, black pepper and Himalayan pink salt that makes any sweet or savory dish taste out of this world. Not only do I add it to oats, but it’s also delicious in soups, stir-frys and smoothies.

Turmeric is known for its myriad medicinal properties. It’s filled with anti-inflammatory compounds and antioxidants that boosts brain function, aids with joint pain, can reduce cancer risk and even has been seen to fight depression. Because turmeric is most helpful when taken regularly, I’ve found that Luna Fixa’s paste has allowed me to easily sneak this superfood into my daily routine.

For more turmeric inspiration, check out my list of Back to School Brain Boosters, where this colorful spice makes an appearance. Plus, if you’re looking for a savory, turmeric-packed recipe, my Curry Chicken Salad is the perfect, flavorful solution.

As for the other ingredients you’ll need for this cozy bowl, only a few, easy staples are required. Quick cooking oats, almond milk, vanilla extract and maple syrup make the perfect base for any toppings you desire.

And let’s get real, the best thing about oatmeal is the blank canvas it provides for all of the delicious add-ins. Whether you love fresh fruit, dried fruit, seeds or nut butter, you truly can’t go wrong. The more the merrier in my book

Ingredients
  •  1 cup quick cooking oats (I used Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free Quick Cooking Rolled Oats)
  •  1 cup water
  •  1 cup almond milk (can use any plant-based or regular milk you prefer)
  •  1 ½ tsp Luna Fixa Curcuma Golden Paste
  •  pinch of salt
  •   tsp vanilla extract
  •  1 tsp maple syrup (more or less depending on taste)
  •  toppings of choice

Directions

In a small saucepan, add the water, almond milk and salt.
When the liquid begins to warm, add the Curcuma Golden Paste and whisk to dissolve. Bring to a boil.
Add in the oats, and turn down to medium heat. Gently stir until incorporated. Cook for about 2 minutes.
Remove from heat, cover and allow to sit for 3-4 minutes.
I topped with sliced banana, dried apricots, pumpkin seeds, Jake and Jubi's Granola Butter and a sprinkle of cinnamon. But use any dried and fresh fruit, seeds and nut butter you love.

Add another splash of milk before serving as well for extra creaminess.

Enjoy!
